Social Care deserves the best managers and leaders. Liberating and affirming services delivered in partnership with people who rely on social care, calls for people with imagination, excitement and enthusiasm. We need confident, skilled and creative leaders and managers in order to raise standards throughout the adult care sector. The Skills Academy will transform the quality of leadership at all levels.

What is the Skills Academy Doing?

The Skills Academy’s is supporting the development of excellent leadership by:

  • Working with employers to develop new programmes and approaches to leadership across social care
  • Developing new approaches to learning in management, commissioning and service development
  • Supporting better service delivery through learning and continued staff development
  • Ensuring that on-going support for leaders, practitioners and personal employers is available through peer support, coaching and mentoring
  • Giving a prominent voice to social care through innovative, high profile seminars, master-classes and national events.

How will we get there?

We have worked with partners across the sector to find out what they need. We have:

  • Consulted with employers, service users and staff on priorities for the sector
  • Worked with key partners to highlight the crucial leadership behaviours that are specific to the social care sector
  • Worked with our expert advisors from right across the social care sector to develop activities that meet the needs of all our users
  • Worked with key partners to develop a new programme for new leaders
  • Produced a Leadership and Management prospectus to engage employers across the sector

What’s next?

The Skills Academy is developing a range of initiatives and activities, including:

  • Developing a credible and recognised pathway for leaders and managers throughout their career
  • Hosting seminars and master classes drawing on national and international expertise
  • Developing programmes for Aspiring Leaders and First-time managers
  • Developing a national register of coaches, advisory materials for those seeking a coach and facilities to match mentors with mentees
